What We Offer

Intersessions are essential in Summit’s winning educational formula. Twice every year, Intersessions are four contiguous weeks when both students and teachers build time into their schedules to do nothing except follow their own intellectual curiosity, expand their knowledge, build their skills, and express their creativity.

For Students, Intersessions satisfy California elective class requirements and are equivalent to a full semester of elective classwork.

For Faculty, Intersessions pay rich professional development dividends and aligned with our principal of “do more with less,” none of Intersession’s outstanding teacher development requires a single substitute teacher, even one early release day, or creates any other logistical headache.

During Intersession, faculty offer extended semesters to work with students who may need extra support to gain mastery in core course requirements, and Intersession is the time when Summit students participate in their elective classes. Summit partners with local organizations, leveraging community resources and expertise to deliver programs that include music and theater workshops, technology classes, service learning internships, independent study projects and more. Our Intersession community partners include:

For eight weeks each year – about tenfold the time spent by most public high school teachers – the Summit core faculty convene for intense blocks of professional development. While core classes are suspended as our students pursue their elective interests, Summit faculty focuses on their own continuous learning.

The faculty set the Intersession agenda and lead sections per their areas of expertise as well as utilize outside instructors from nearby universities and coaching organizations. This collaboration refines our focus and aligns our instructional priorities, and we keep abreast of and incorporate educational best practices, refining our curriculum and strengthening classroom management techniques.
